Are you relying on your memory during a therapy debrief?

Record the therapy debrief with the provider's consent, transcribe it into a short summary, and keep the notes together by provider. A two to three minute debrief in a parking lot is gone by the time you get to work, so capture it while it is fresh.

After my son's private speech therapy session, I meet the therapist outside the building and they give me a two to three minute debrief. I am not handed a piece of paper or an email recap, so I have to rely on my memory. Then I get in the car, drop my three boys off at school, and go to work. By the time I get there, I remember very little, if anything, of what was discussed. Having a way to record and transcribe each debrief helps keep me organized.

Here are three tips:

1. Record the therapy debrief with the provider, with their consent.
2. Transcribe it, so you have a summary of who the therapist was, the date of service, the topics covered, the techniques used, and how the session aligns with your child's stated therapy goals.
3. Keep all the therapy notes together by provider or specialty type.
